Upper Egypt
For thousands of years, Egypt has been a deeply spiritual land, and since the earliest times the Nile and all it produces have been considered divine gifts. Originally called ‘Kemit’, the Black Land, Egypt has successively been home to several of the worlds great religions; Egyptian, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, each in their own way providing the divine link between man and God.
The ancients divided the land into two parts; Upper and Lower Egypt, referring to the south and the north respectively. Luxor, formerly known as Ancient Thebes, was the religious and spiritual capital of the country and its greatest surviving monument, Karnak, is still today the largest sacred site in the world.
Living in Luxor the blend of the modern and the ancient become a part of everyday life, and these paintings capture several different aspects of this; views of the ancient Egyptian temples, farming, the landscape of the lush valley and the harsh desert, scenes of everyday life, and the source of all life itself, the Nile. Step in and explore this timeless, mystical world.
